Five Areas of Reflection for Educators

Instruction

The first area of reflection is instruction. How effective are the instructional strategies being used in classrooms? Successful educators see teaching as a process that requires continuous improvement. Consideration about which instructional strategies to use, what works, or didn’t work is essential if teachers are to improve and meet the needs of their students.

Not only must teachers be reflective about instructional strategies used in their classrooms, but principals also must be observant as the instructional leaders. They must visit classrooms, observe lessons, and have conversations about instruction with the individual teachers, teams, and teacher leaders. Together with teachers, principals must reflect upon what data and observation notes reveal about teaching and learning.

During reflection about instruction, think about these things. What is the effectiveness of the strategies you used? Are there challenges you may face when implementing new strategies? Based on the analysis of data, what changes would you make to your decisions? How would you make changes to meet the needs of students and their learning styles?
